POLICE LAUNCH INVESTIGATION AFTER ALISON HAMMOND 'LOSES THOUSANDS IN BLACKMAIL PLOT'

Alison Hammond, 48, has allegedly been blackmailed by a person she once thought to be her friend. Sources claimed that the This Morning star went to the authorities as the demands continued. West Midlands Police has now confirmed an investigation is open.

The force said in a statement to Express.co.uk: "We are investigating an allegation of blackmail of a woman in her 40s.

"We take reports of this kind very seriously and our enquiries are progressing swiftly."

The Sun reported that the star had "handed over thousands of pounds" to the culprit who threatened to "ruin" her with lies if she didn't pay.

She also reportedly bought the man a £5,000 BMW before going to the police to show the "sinister blackmail messages".

Sources told the publication that Alison had "trusted this guy" but now feels "stupid" and "naive".

The blackmail allegedly started eight months ago when he threatened to "tell the world" lies that could derail her thriving career in the public eye.

She allegedly offered to pay for her so-called friend to go to rehab, following which he took advantage of her generous nature.

Alison reportedly fears for her and her family's safety as she now refuses to give the man any more money.

The alleged blackmail plot comes amid a myriad of career and lifetime achievements for the media personality.

Earlier this month, Alison was announced as the new host for The Great British Bake Off, replacing former presenter Matt Lucas.

She is also now said to be lined up for the new Sky quiz show, In Demand.

Just last month, Alison made history as the first black woman to co-host the BAFTAs, alongside Swazi-English actor Richard E Grant.

The This Morning presenter was in her element as she took charge of behind-the-scenes interviews, talking to a variety of celebrities, nominees and winners throughout the evening.
