UK WARNED DRAMATIC 'SIX DAY' WEATHER SHIFT WILL HIT ENGLAND FROM TODAY

The UK has been warned a "six day" weather shift will kick off TODAY - after sweltering highs took parts of the south of England and Greater London to a stifling and unseasonal 27C on Friday September 6. The warning comes ahead of the mercury plunging.

Meteorologists have warned a 10C weather shift will kick off from today and leave the UK on the brink of autumn within just six days. The mercury will drop from 21C to 11C on Thursday - barely in double digits - while other areas see single figures.

Whilst the southern half of the UK experiences pulses of heavy rain over the next few days, sunnier skies further north will allow temperatures to rise well above average in places. 25 or 26°C is likely from central to northwest parts of the UK on Friday, and similar values are possible in western Scotland on Saturday.

The early outlook from the Met Office for Monday to Wednesday explaines: "Becoming increasingly unsettled as we move into next week, a change in wind direction will lead to fresher conditions spreading across most areas from Tuesday."

And in a September 11 to September 20 forecast, the meteorological body says: "This period is expected to start off on a very cool note, with winds from the north or northwest bringing reasonable amounts of sunshine, particularly to southern areas, but also fairly frequent showers to the north, especially coasts and hills.

"Showers could be of sleet or snow on some of the highest mountain tops. A gradual recovery in temperatures is expected through the rest of the week as winds become more westerly, the focus of rain then changing to west and northwest areas, whilst southern parts likely see a good deal of fine weather.

"By the following week, confidence is very low, but more settled conditions than of late are most likely overall, especially in the north, and accompanied by warmer temperatures. Any unsettled spells more likely further south."
