DETENTIONS COULD ‘START IN DAYS’ AFTER RWANDA BILL PASSES

The detention of migrants could start within days after the Government’s Rwanda Bill finally passed just after midnight on Tuesday, following a months-long stand-off between the Commons and the House of Lords.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the passing of his flagship migration policy “not just a step forward but a fundamental change in the global equation on migration” and has set a target of getting the first flights off the ground in 10 to 12 weeks, despite human rights groups condemning it as a “breach of international law”.

Between 100 and 150 migrants have been identified for the first flights to Kigali, according to reports, and the first of two cohorts could be sent deportation notification letters “within days”.

However, official Home Office documents leaked last year revealed that only 700 of the original 5,000 people earmarked for deportation are still in “regular contact” with the department.
