EVERYTHING WE KNOW ABOUT LARGE BUCHANAN STREET FIRE EXPLOSION

Police and fire crews swarmed Buchanan Street after an explosion sparked a blaze in the busy shopping area.

The Glasgow Times attended the scene this morning while worried bystanders watched in horror as huge smoke clouds pillowed from a building behind Zara.

Workmen who witnessed the fire shared exclusive footage they captured of the flames, which they believe were caused by an electrical fault.

The video clip also shows the moment they were forced to take cover after a “loud bang” erupted from the building.

One of the workmen told our reporter: "I just heard a massive bang and then saw the fire, I couldn't believe it.

"I got such a fright it was like a big explosion. There was loads of smoke coming out the building as well. I think it was an electrical fire."

He added: "There was a massive bang and then a huge fire. I think it came from a plant room but that hasn't been confirmed. I hope everyone is safe.

"We were working in the building next door and got evacuated for safety. It all happened really suddenly. We don't know when we will get back to work."

Specialist engineers were also pictured on-site of the fire within the seven-storey building.

Seven fire engines attended the scene of the inferno which kicked off at around 9.40am this morning.

Fire crews confirmed there were no reported casualties, although ambulance crews also attended the scene.

Buchanan Street is the city's biggest shopping street with football just behind London's Oxford Street.

It is a pedestrianised area and is part of the famous style mile which links Argyle Street and Sauchiehall Street.

Blair Cameron, 24 saw the drama and said: “There were fire engines coming in all directions.

“I thought I would go investigate, I got off the bus and saw the blue lights everywhere.

“Firefighters told me luckily no one has been injured, but because of where it was located they had to put the response up to lots of appliances.

“You could smell the smoke from ages away. I respect the fire service. “
