SECURITY AGREEMENT WITH EU WILL GUARANTEE CONTINUED SUPPORT FOR UKRAINE - MICHEL
Ukraine and the European Union will sign a security agreement today, June 27th. This agreement will guarantee long-term support for Ukraine, according to European Council President Charles Michel ahead of the EU summit.
"We have an occasion today to sign some additional bilateral security agreements with Ukraine, it is important so that we can send a message that we intend to support Ukraine for as long as it takes," he said.
Michel also welcomed the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU. In his view, this is an additional step that demonstrates commitment to the Ukrainian people, leadership, and political will to join the European Union.
The President of the European Council also emphasized that the EU will support Ukraine not only in the military sphere but also financially.
"We have decided to target the income from frozen assets, making important decisions at the EU level. This means that in the weeks and months to come, the initial allocation of funds will be concrete and effective. We are also working with partners from the G7 to provide an additional 50 billion euros," Michel added.
The signing of the security guarantees agreement between Ukraine and the EU was also commented on by the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell. He noted that Europe needs to make up for lost time in defense, adding that it will not be easy.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
Ukraine has signed security guarantees agreements with nearly 20 countries, including the USA, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway.
It is expected that today Ukraine and the European Union will sign a security agreement. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Brussels for the EU summit with this goal in mind.
According to the head of state, in Brussels, he will also sign two more security guarantees agreements. In addition, Zelenskyy will hold talks with EU leaders.
