TRUMP PLANS TO WITHDRAW THE US FROM IMPORTANT CLIMATE TREATY

Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reported that Donald Trump, former US President, intends to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement again if he wins the election, according to Politico,

According to Politico, American conservatives have been laying the groundwork for Trump to withdraw the US from the Paris Climate Agreement upon returning to power. A lawyer familiar with the process told Politico that a series of executive orders is being prepared for Trump to sign immediately upon his return to the White House.

Politico contacted the Trump campaign spokesperson and received confirmation regarding Trump's intentions.

"Yes, he has said that he would (withdraw the US from the climate agreement)," Leavitt responded.

As Politico notes, Trump's plans are not surprising. He previously withdrew the US from the agreement and criticized it during televised debates with President Joe Biden. During the debates, Trump called the agreement "a rip off of the United States" and "a disaster."

A lawyer familiar with the process told Politico that there are currently "a couple different versions" of the executive orders for the US withdrawal from the agreement that Trump is expected to sign. According to him, one version includes withdrawing the US from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Politico points out that exiting the UN Framework Convention would be a much more drastic step, effectively ending US participation in global climate negotiations and undermining international cooperation. The Trump campaign spokesperson declined to comment on this information.

The US joined the Paris Agreement in 2015 under President Barack Obama. In 2020, then-President Trump announced the US withdrawal from the agreement. After Joe Biden took office a year later, Washington rejoined the agreement.

The Paris Climate Agreement, concluded in 2016, aims to combat climate change by limiting the increase in the global average temperature, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and taking similar measures.
