ALEXIS MAC ALLISTER ISSUES LIVERPOOL EXIT VERDICT IN BLUNT MESSAGE TO REAL MADRID LINKS

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister has played down fears over a move to Real Madrid - claiming he is 'very happy' at the club.

The record Champions League holders emerged as potential suitors to end the Argentina international's spell on Merseyside. Mac Allister was one of the standout performers in Jurgen Klopp's final season in charge, scoring seven goals, and providing as many assists, in all competitions.

After his move from Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, he was forced to play in an unorthodox role throughout the season as a number six - following Jordan Henderson's and Fabinho's surprise move to the Saudi Pro League.

The Mirror claimed that reports emanating from the midfielder's native Argentina suggested that Carlo Ancelotti's side were looking to lure the 25-year-old to the Spanish capital, next year.

But Mac Allister turned down the opportunity to get sucked into a transfer frenzy. He said, via ESPN Argentina: "I don’t talk about assumptions, I’m very happy at Liverpool.

"I think it was a good season individually, then we had some objectives that we couldn’t meet, but I still think it was a very good season."

There will be change in Madrid's midfield next season after news of Toni Kroos' retirement after the European Championships in his homeland. At Anfield, Dutch manager Arne Slot will take over the helm after Klopp's exit, after he was confirmed as the German's successor on Monday.

"It is certainly not an easy decision to close the door behind you at a club where you have experienced so many wonderful moments and worked successfully with so many wonderful people," The 45-year-old said in his final interview with Feyenoord.

"But as a sportsman, an opportunity to become a head coach in the Premier League, at one of the biggest clubs in the world, is difficult to ignore."
