ENZO MARESCA'S 'ROLE' IN CHELSEA TRANSFER FOR KIERNAN DEWSBURY-HALL SPEAKS VOLUMES

Enzo Maresca has already had a glimpse into what his Chelsea future holds after the club's sporting directors reportedly took charge of the club's quest for a new midfield option.

A familiar face to the Italian manager, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is set to join Chelsea in a £30million deal from Leicester, who formerly employed Maresca. It has been reported, however, that the new man in charge wasn't the one who led the campaign to secure Dewsbury-Hall's signature, but that Chelsea's board pulled the majority of the strings.

This reveals plenty about the role that the Championship-winning Maresca will play within this Chelsea outfit and the backseat that he will take when it comes to transfers.

After a relatively successful campaign with Leicester, Maresca packed his bags for Stamford Bridge after just a year with the Foxes. During his time at the King Power, Maresca responded to the claims that he had taken issue with the running of the club, exclaiming: “No, no, I’m not asking for more control. I’m asking just to be able to do my job that I’m being paid for. No more than that."

Many have pointed out this attitude as one that juxtaposes with the recently dismissed Mauricio Pochettino, whose power struggles with Chelsea's hierarchy were well documented.

It was Maresca's Premier League 2 title success with Manchester City in 2021 that saw him given his first taste of first-team management, with Parma in his native Italy. After just a year in his homeland, he returned to Manchester City, taking up a position as an assistant manager within Pep Guardiola's staff.

In a similar fashion to the likes of another former assistant, Mikel Arteta, and Pep's longtime City captain Vincent Kompany, Maresca sought greener solo pastures when he joined Leicester in 2023. Now, he's set to lead Chelsea into the new campaign, being imminently joined by one of his key puzzle pieces during his past tenure in the form of Dewsbury-Hall.

Chelsea have already completed plenty of early business, having sold defenders Ian Matasen and Lewis Hall and brought in Omari Kellyman. But with a plethora of other names floating around the Stamford Bridge rumour mill, their dealings most likely won't be done just yet.

It seems, however, that whoever else may come through the doors in west London, won't hugely be down to the demands of Enzo Maresca.
