Coastal areas are at risk of flooding today Thursday, September 19 as the UK experiences higher than usual tides, brought on by the rare occurrence of the alignment of the full moon, sun and earth. Spectators, surfers, and visitors gather on the beach at Newquay for the natural spectacle. Spring tides occur twice a month (and not necessarily just in spring) and cause high tides to be higher than usual. The Environment Agency predicts tides in Cornwall will be 0.03m above tide table level and may well cause flooding along coastal communities. Six flood alerts have been issued across Cornwall, covering the county from Penzance in the West to Looe in the East.
